Passing It On for Good: Viva’s Story of Giving

At the Houston Lone Star Diaper Bank, we believe that every diaper matters—and every act of generosity does too. It’s often the quiet, thoughtful gestures that ripple out the farthest, and one local mom, Viva, recently reminded us just how powerful a simple donation can be.
From Surplus to Support
Viva’s son Liam receives monthly diaper shipments through his health insurance plan, a vital benefit that supports his care needs as a 9-year-old with a disability. As Liam grows, his needs have evolved, and some of the products provided no longer fit or suit him. Before long, Viva found herself with a growing stack of unused diapers. Too valuable to waste, she knew they could help another family if given the chance.
Rather than let them sit unused, Viva reached out to the Houston Lone Star Diaper Bank to ask if we accept diapers provided through insurance—even open packs.
Our answer: Absolutely.
We gratefully accept new and clean unused diapers, incontinence products, period products, and any non-perishable personal care items even if the packages are open or were provided through government or insurance programs. These kinds of donations help us stretch our reach further and serve more families who are struggling to afford the basics.
And for those who can’t drop off items in person? We’ll send you a prepaid shipping label. It’s part of our commitment to making giving as easy and accessible as possible.
Why Donations Like Viva’s Matter
Viva’s donation may seem like a small gesture, but for a struggling parent, those incontinence products could mean the difference between sending their child to school with dignity or staying home due to a lack of proper care supplies. Between using a clean product or one that’s been reused. Between comfort and chronic skin irritation.
In fact, 1 in 2 U.S. families struggles to afford diapers and incontinence supplies—a basic need not covered by government assistance like SNAP or WIC. That’s where diaper banks come in. But we can’t do this alone.
We rely heavily on the generosity of individuals, churches, schools, civic groups, and businesses to keep our shelves stocked and our programs running. Every box, bag, and bundle of diapers makes a difference. Whether it’s a bulk shipment from a warehouse or a single opened pack from a pantry shelf, it all adds up.
Passing It On for Good
Viva and Liam's story is a beautiful reminder of how resources that are no longer needed can be passed along to become blessings for others. Her act of kindness has already helped other families—and inspired us to spread the word about this underutilized form of giving.
So if you, a friend, or a family member have unused diapers sitting in a closet, whether provided through Medicaid, private insurance, or any other source, we invite you to pass it on for good. Let your surplus become someone else’s safety net.
How to Donate
We accept open or sealed packages of new, unused diapers, incontinence products, period products, and any non-perishable personal care products.
